Komodo 2D1N Short Cruise on Yumana: The Weekend Phinisi Escape

The 2D1N cruise on Yumana Liveaboard is a two-day, one-night sailing from Labuan Bajo that covers the iconic southern loop — Padar Island at sunrise, Pink Beach, a ranger-guided dragon walk and one manta or reef stop — before returning the next day. Cabins start at IDR 5,000,000 per person on a shared departure. It exists for one reason: travellers whose Bali itinerary has exactly one night to spare. It is a real Komodo trip, but it is a compressed one, and this page says plainly what you give up.
Most Komodo content will tell you two nights is the minimum. That is good advice, and if you have the time you should follow it. But a lot of people arrive in Indonesia with a fixed return flight and a single free night, and the honest choice for them is not between 2D1N and 3D2N — it is between 2D1N and not seeing Komodo at all. On a 32-metre phinisi with a private cabin, one night at anchor under the park’s sky is still one of the better nights you will spend in Indonesia.
The realistic 2D1N route
| Day | Stops | Approximate rhythm |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Labuan Bajo harbour → Kelor Island or Kanawa Island → Kalong Island sunset → overnight anchorage near Padar | Midday to early-afternoon boarding, one swim and snorkel stop, sunset flying-fox flight, dinner, then a night run to position the boat for the morning climb. |
| Day 2 | Padar Island sunrise → Pink Beach → Komodo or Rinca ranger walk → Manta Point / Karang Makassar → Labuan Bajo | Pre-dawn tender to Padar, then a tightly run sequence back toward the harbour, arriving mid to late afternoon. |
This is Yumana’s own plan and it is weather-adjustable like every other route in the park. On a one-night sailing there is less slack in the schedule, so a closed anchorage has a bigger effect than it would on a longer trip.
What you will miss compared with 3D2N
Being direct about this is more useful than selling you a compressed trip as a complete one:
- Taka Makassar and Siaba Besar. The sandbar and the turtle grounds are usually the first casualties of a one-night schedule.
- Unhurried in-water time. Snorkel and dive blocks are shorter. You will get in the water at the manta site; you will not linger there.
- A second evening on board. The sky deck at anchor after dinner is, for many guests, the memory that outlasts the islands. One night gives you one of those.
- The northern park entirely. Gili Lawa Darat is geographically out of reach — that requires the 4D3N full park circuit.
- Weather margin. With two nights there is room to try Padar again the following morning. With one, there is not.
If your schedule can absorb a single extra day, the 3D2N open trip is the better product and we will say so on the phone. If it cannot, read on.
Flight timing: the part people get wrong
Komodo Airport at Labuan Bajo is the gateway, and several Indonesian carriers fly the Denpasar route daily with roughly one hour to one hour fifteen of block time. On a one-night trip the flight schedule is not a detail — it is the itinerary.
| Leg | What to book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bali → Labuan Bajo, day 1 | The earliest morning departure you can get | Boarding is around midday. A delayed afternoon flight means you miss the sailing entirely, and there is no next boat. |
| Labuan Bajo → Bali, day 2 | Evening, not late afternoon | Harbour arrival is mid to late afternoon and you still need the transfer. A tight connection turns the last two stops into a race. |
| Large luggage | Leave it in Labuan Bajo | Hotels store bags, and so can our office. Phinisi cabins are compact and hard-shell cases do not stow. |
Cabins and pricing
The same eight cabins are available on a short cruise as on any other departure — queen bed with extra bed available, air conditioning and a private bathroom throughout, with the Royal Suite adding a private balcony and a jacuzzi.
| Cabin category | Deck | Rooms on board | Max guests | Shared-departure rate (per person) | Additional person |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superior Cabin | Lower | 2 | 3 | IDR 5,000,000 | IDR 4,250,000 |
| Deluxe Cabin | Lower | 2 | 3 | IDR 6,350,000 | IDR 4,250,000 |
| Signature Cabin I (main deck) | Main | 1 | 3 | IDR 6,750,000 (min. 2 pax) | IDR 4,250,000 |
| Signature Cabin II & III (upper deck) | Upper | 2 | 3 | IDR 7,000,000 | IDR 4,250,000 |
| Royal Suite Cabin | Upper | 1 | 2 + 2 | IDR 9,250,000 | IDR 4,250,000 |
Rates above are the published shared-departure (open trip) rates held on this vessel, quoted in Indonesian rupiah, which is the billed currency. Private full-boat charter is quoted separately on request. Confirm the live rate for your travel dates before you transfer anything.
On a single-night sailing, our practical advice is not to over-buy the cabin. You will be in it for one night and on deck for most of the daylight hours, so a Superior or Deluxe cabin usually represents the better value and the difference is better spent on a longer trip next time. The full cost picture, including park and government fees, sits on the Yumana price list.
Who this is for
The 2D1N works for travellers on a fixed Bali return, for business visitors adding a weekend, for guests testing whether liveaboard travel suits them before committing to a longer sailing, and for repeat visitors who have already done the full circuit and want the Padar sunrise again. It does not work for divers — the dive blocks are too short to justify the trip — and it does not work for families who need a slower rhythm with children.
Whole-boat hire for a single night is possible and is quoted on request; see the private full-boat charter page. For a wider view of ways to experience Komodo, including land-based and day-trip options, our parent operator lists the alternatives.
Frequently asked questions
Is one night on a Komodo liveaboard actually worth it?
If the alternative is not going, yes. You get the Padar sunrise, Pink Beach, a dragon walk and one manta stop, plus a night at anchor on a phinisi. If the alternative is a 3D2N a few months later, take the longer trip — the difference is significant and we would rather you were happy than early.
Will we still climb Padar Island?
That is the whole point of the overnight positioning run: the boat anchors near Padar so you can tender ashore before dawn. If the anchorage is closed by weather, the captain substitutes a sheltered alternative and we tell you on board rather than pretending the plan is intact.
Where do we leave our main luggage?
At your Labuan Bajo hotel or with our office near the harbour. Bring a soft duffel or backpack with one change of clothes, swimwear, sun protection, trainers for the Padar and dragon walks, and any medication. Everything else stays ashore.
What happens if my inbound flight is delayed?
Tell us immediately on WhatsApp. If the delay is short the boat can sometimes hold briefly; if it is long, the sailing leaves without you, because thirty other guests are on a fixed schedule. This is the single biggest risk of a one-night trip and it is why we insist on a morning flight.
Is one night enough to see a Komodo dragon?
Yes. The ranger-guided walk at Loh Liang on Komodo Island or Loh Buaya on Rinca is built into day two, and sightings on the guided trail are routine. Rangers set the pace and the distance; you follow their instructions, always.
Can we upgrade to a longer trip after booking?
Subject to availability, yes. If a longer departure has an open cabin on your dates we will move you and rebill the difference. It is far easier to arrange before your deposit than in the last week, so ask early.
