Snorkelling-Only Komodo Cruise on Yumana: Built for Non-Divers

Komodo has an unhelpful reputation as a divers-only destination. It is not. The park’s most famous encounters — manta rays cruising a cleaning station, turtles grazing seagrass, reef fish over shallow coral — happen in water shallow enough that a mask and a set of fins are all the equipment required. What snorkellers genuinely miss are the deep current sites: Batu Bolong, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock. Everything else on this page is available to you.

The snorkelling sites, honestly rated

Site selection on any given day is the captain’s call, based on tide, current and wind. Nobody in Komodo can promise you a specific site on a specific morning, and the operators who do are describing a brochure rather than the sea. Manta etiquette, which is not optional

Manta rays at Karang Makassar and Mawan are wild animals using a cleaning station. Their behaviour changes when snorkellers crowd them, and a spooked manta leaves the site for everyone behind you. The rules our crew enforce:

• Keep a distance of several metres and never chase, touch or attempt to ride a manta — this is a hard rule, not a courtesy.
• Stay out of the water column directly above the cleaning station; mantas need clear vertical space to circle.
• Move calmly. Thrashing fins and sudden dives push animals off the site.
• No flash photography.
• Listen to the current briefing before you enter. Karang Makassar is a drift site and the tender picks you up downstream — you do not swim back.

Mixed groups: divers and snorkellers on one departure

Most Yumana sailings carry both, and the day is built so neither group waits on the other. The tender drops divers at the descent point while snorkellers work a shallower section of the same reef with a crew guide in the water; both groups surface into the same pickup and are back aboard for the same meal. Couples where one person dives and the other does not are the most common configuration on this boat, and it works. Equipment, and what to bring yourself

If you cannot swim well

Say so at booking, and again to the crew on boarding. Non-swimmers and weak swimmers do join these trips. A buoyancy vest or pool noodle keeps you at the surface with no effort, a crew member accompanies you, and at gentle sites like Siaba Besar and Pink Beach the water is calm enough that floating and looking down is the entire activity. Every in-water stop is optional — there is no pressure and no penalty for staying on the sky deck with a drink while everyone else gets wet.

Frequently asked questions

Can I see manta rays while snorkelling, or do I have to dive?

Snorkelling. Karang Makassar’s cleaning station sits in water shallow enough that mantas are regularly visible from the surface, and many guests get their best manta view from a snorkel rather than a tank. Sightings are seasonal and never guaranteed — odds are strongest in the December to March window in the southern sites.

Is the current dangerous for snorkellers?

Komodo has real current and it deserves respect, which is why every drift entry is briefed and crew-supervised and the tender collects you downstream. Sites are chosen for the conditions on the day, and the crew will call off a stop rather than put snorkellers into water that is running too hard. If that happens, we substitute.

What are the best snorkelling spots in Komodo?

For mantas, Karang Makassar and Mawan. For easy, beautiful shallow water, Taka Makassar and Kanawa. For turtles, Siaba Besar. For a beach entry with coral straight off the sand, Pink Beach. Those five cover the park’s snorkelling highlights and all of them are on our route.

Do I need my own equipment?

No. Masks, snorkels, fins and flotation are on board. The one exception is a prescription mask, which we cannot supply — bring yours if you need corrected vision in the water.

Can children snorkel on the trip?

Yes, with a life jacket, a parent in the water and site selection adjusted to the calmer bays. Tell us the ages at booking so the crew plans for it. Children stay out of the drift sites.

What else is there to do if I do not want to get in the water at all?

The Padar Island viewpoint climb, the ranger-guided Komodo dragon walk on Komodo or Rinca, the sunset flying-fox flight at Kalong Island, beach time at Pink Beach, and long stretches on the sky deck watching the park go past. A significant number of our guests never put a mask on and still rate the trip highly.
