What age does a Komodo liveaboard start to work?

There is no legal cut-off, but there is a practical one. From around six to eight years old, a reasonably confident child who can swim with a buoyancy aid, walk for forty minutes and sleep somewhere unfamiliar will have a very good time. From about ten upward, they get almost everything an adult gets.

Below school age it becomes a different holiday. A toddler on a boat is a full-time supervision job for one parent, at anchor, in heat, with open decks and a tender that keeps arriving and departing. It can be done and families do it, particularly on a private charter where the schedule bends to nap times. It is simply worth going in with clear eyes rather than discovering it on day one.

Which activities suit which ages?

The dragon trek deserves a specific note. Rangers brief every group, and one of the standing instructions is that children stay close and in the middle of the group. Komodo dragons are wild predators with a documented history of attacking when people separate from the group; this is not the walk on which to let a child run ahead. If your child cannot reliably stay beside you for forty minutes, take the shorter loop or leave them on the boat with the other parent.

How do you fit a family into the cabins?

Yumana has eight cabins across five categories, and most take an additional person at IDR 4,250,000 on shared departures. The practical configurations:

• Royal Suite — upper deck, private balcony, jacuzzi, configured for two plus two. The natural family cabin, and there is only one of it, so it goes first.
• Signature II & III (upper deck) — two cabins, up to three guests each. A workable pair for two adults plus two children in adjacent rooms.
• Signature I (main deck) — up to three guests, minimum two.
• Deluxe and Superior (lower deck) — up to three guests each, least motion, closest to machinery hum. The budget-sensible family option.

Open trip or private charter with children?

If your children are young, loud or on a fixed nap schedule, charter the whole boat. It removes every social calculation, lets the captain slow the itinerary down, and means an early bedtime does not clash with someone else’s dinner. If your children are older and sociable, a shared departure is often better — teenagers on a small boat with a mixed group of adults tend to have a far more interesting week than they expected. What safety measures matter with kids on board?

• Life jackets in child sizes — tell us ages and approximate weights at booking so the right sizes are aboard.
• Tender discipline — children sit, hold on, and board and disembark only when crew say so. Every transfer, without exception.
• Deck rules — no running on wet timber, no climbing rails, and an agreed rule that a child is never on deck alone at night.
• Sun — children burn faster and notice later. Rash vests beat sunscreen, and midday snorkelling is where it happens.
• Hydration — heat plus salt water dehydrates children quickly. Refillable bottles, checked regularly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum age for a Komodo liveaboard?

There is no fixed minimum, but the trip works best from roughly school age. Younger children are possible, particularly on a private charter where the schedule can flex, and require constant supervision on deck and in tenders.

Can children do the Komodo dragon trek?

Older children generally can, on the short loop, staying close to the ranger and inside the group. This is a wild-predator environment, and children who cannot stay beside an adult for the duration should not go on the trail.

Are there family cabins on Yumana?

The Royal Suite is configured for two plus two and is the natural family cabin. Most other categories take up to three guests with an additional-person charge, so two adjacent cabins often works better than one shared room.

Can children who cannot swim well still snorkel?

Yes, at the sheltered stops such as Siaba Besar and Kanawa, wearing a buoyancy aid with an adult or crew member alongside. The drift sites in current are a different proposition and are not suitable for weak swimmers.

Is a Komodo liveaboard safe for kids?

With the ordinary precautions of any boat — life jackets, tender discipline, no running on wet decks, adult supervision — yes. The crew is experienced with families, and it helps enormously if you tell us ages in advance.

Should we book a private charter for a family trip?

With young children, usually yes: you control the pace, meal times and bedtimes without coordinating with strangers. With teenagers, a shared departure is often the more sociable and better-value choice.
