How do you get to Komodo?

There is one practical door: Komodo Airport (LBJ) at Labuan Bajo, on the western tip of Flores. Almost every visitor connects through Bali’s Ngurah Rai International (DPS), which handles the international arrivals and feeds the domestic hop. Jakarta also connects, directly and via Bali, and there are regional services from other Indonesian hubs.

The flight itself is short — roughly an hour to an hour and a quarter — and the arrival is one of the better ones in Indonesia: the aircraft descends over the islands and bays you are about to sail through. From the terminal to Labuan Bajo harbour is a short drive of ten to fifteen minutes.

Why do we insist you arrive the day before?

Because this route delays. It is served by narrow-body and turboprop aircraft on tight domestic rotations, weather in the Flores Sea moves quickly, and a morning cancellation frequently pushes passengers to an afternoon service. If your boat boards at 08:00 and your flight was supposed to land at 07:15, you have no plan — the vessel cannot hold a departure that would compromise the tide window or the sequence of the whole itinerary.

Arriving the previous afternoon converts a stressful morning into a relaxed one. You sleep in Labuan Bajo, eat dinner on the waterfront, and step onto the boat rested. It also gives you a buffer for luggage that did not travel with you.

What does a sensible travel day look like?

On the return, the rule is the same in reverse. Do not book an international departure out of Bali on the same evening you disembark. If the LBJ–DPS leg is delayed, you miss a long-haul flight, and that is an expensive way to save one hotel night. A night in Bali after the cruise is the cheap insurance.

Baggage, and what to do with the rest of it

Domestic Indonesian allowances are tighter than international ones and vary by carrier and fare class — check yours rather than assuming your international allowance carries through. Excess is usually payable at the airport, but budget the time for it.

What happens at the harbour?

Labuan Bajo’s harbour is busy and boats do not all board from the same point. You will be given a meeting point and a time in your pre-departure pack, and our team meets you there rather than leaving you to find a wooden boat among fifty wooden boats. Transfer from your hotel or the airport is arranged as part of your booking — tell us your flight number when you book so the pickup matches your actual arrival, not your scheduled one.

From the harbour you go out to the vessel by tender, which takes a few minutes. Shoes come off on deck, bags go to cabins, and the safety briefing follows before the anchor comes up.

What if you miss boarding?

Be straight with us early. If your inbound flight is cancelled, message us the moment you know — not when you land. Depending on where the boat is in its route and what the weather is doing, options can sometimes include a later tender transfer to meet the vessel at its first anchorage. That is not always possible; once the boat is deep inside the park it is not practical at all.
