Wi-Fi, Signal and Power on a Komodo Liveaboard

Short answer. Expect patchy mobile signal near Labuan Bajo and effectively none deep inside Komodo National Park. Power is available at anchor from the vessel’s generators, with sockets in cabins and common areas. Plan to be offline for most of the sailing and tell people at home before you go.

Will you have internet on a Komodo liveaboard?

Realistically, no — not in any usable sense once you are inside the park. Komodo National Park is a marine protected area with almost no permanent population, no coastal towns of any size and consequently very little cellular infrastructure. Coverage is a function of where the towers are, and the towers are around Labuan Bajo and on Flores.

Do not book a Komodo liveaboard expecting to run a working week from the sky deck. If you have an unavoidable commitment mid-trip, deal with it before you board or accept that you will miss it. This is the one aspect of a liveaboard that consistently surprises guests, and it is much better handled as an expectation than as a shock on day two.

Where does signal actually exist?

LocationRealistic signalWhat you can do
Labuan Bajo harbour and townGood 4G on major Indonesian networksEverything — upload, calls, video
First hour out of harbourWeak and fadingMessages, maybe a call
Kelor and Kanawa areaIntermittentText messages, occasionally
Kalong anchorageWeak to noneAssume none
Padar, Komodo, RincaVery little to noneNothing reliable
Karang Makassar, Taka Makassar, Gili LawaNoneNothing

Occasionally someone finds a bar of signal on a high deck at a particular anchorage in particular weather. Treat that as a lottery win, not a plan. Note also that any onboard Wi-Fi on a vessel of this type would be relayed from the same cellular network — it cannot conjure coverage that is not there. Confirm with us what connectivity your specific sailing offers rather than assuming.

What about power and charging?

This part is straightforward. Yumana carries double PS120 generators, which supply the vessel’s air conditioning, lighting and sockets while at anchor and underway. There are sockets in cabins and in the common areas.

  • Voltage and plug: Indonesia uses 230 V at 50 Hz with the European two-round-pin socket. European kit plugs straight in; UK, US and Australian equipment needs an adapter.
  • Etiquette: eight cabins and one common area means limited outlets. Charge what you need, unplug when it is full, and do not monopolise a socket with a laptop you are not using.
  • High-draw appliances: hairdryers, travel irons and similar put unnecessary load on the generators. Leave them at home.
  • Sensitive electronics: generator power on any small vessel can fluctuate. If you carry expensive camera gear, a small surge protector is cheap insurance.

How should you plan camera and phone batteries?

Assume you will shoot far more than usual. A liveaboard day contains a sunrise trek, a dragon walk, two or three snorkel stops and a sunset, and heat plus humidity drain batteries faster than at home. The strategy that works:

  1. Bring at least two spare camera batteries and charge them nightly, not on the morning you need them.
  2. Carry a 10,000–20,000 mAh power bank — it takes the pressure off the cabin socket completely.
  3. Put your phone in airplane mode from the moment signal fades. A phone hunting for a network it cannot find is the fastest way to a flat battery on a boat.
  4. Clear memory cards before you board, and back up to a second card or a phone at night.
  5. Keep everything in a dry bag on the tender. Salt spray finishes more cameras in Komodo than water depth ever does.

The complete kit list, including the head torch that matters more than anything electronic, is on our cabin-sized packing list.

How do you tell people at home?

Before you board, send one clear message: the dates you will be offline, the fact that this is normal and expected, and the emergency route. That route is our shore team — WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 and [email protected] — which is reachable while you are not, and which knows where the vessel is. The boat itself carries proper marine communications; the point is that your family should contact the office, not your silent phone.

Do the same for work. An out-of-office with real dates prevents the low-grade anxiety that otherwise follows people onto the sky deck.

Is being offline actually a problem?

Honestly, it is the part guests thank us for. Three days without notifications, in a place with no ambient screens, changes how the trip feels — conversations at dinner run longer, people actually watch the flying foxes leave Kalong rather than filming them, and the night sky gets looked at. If you want a version of this trip with more control over the schedule, that is a case for a full-boat charter rather than for connectivity — see our private charter page. Which cabins have sockets where, and how deck position affects everything from noise to charging, is covered on our cabin comparison and deck plan. For fleet-wide expectations, our parent operator addresses connectivity in the park directly.

Frequently asked questions

Is there Wi-Fi on a Komodo liveaboard?

Plan on no usable internet inside the park. Any onboard Wi-Fi relays the same cellular network that barely reaches the anchorages. Confirm with us what your specific sailing offers rather than assuming coverage.

Will my phone work in Komodo National Park?

Around Labuan Bajo, yes, on the major Indonesian networks. Deep inside the park, effectively no. Signal fades within the first hour or two of leaving harbour and does not meaningfully return until you head back.

Is there electricity and are there power sockets on board?

Yes. Yumana runs twin generators supplying sockets in cabins and common areas at 230 V, 50 Hz, with European two-pin sockets. Bring an adapter if your equipment is UK, US or Australian.

Should I buy an Indonesian SIM card?

It is useful for Bali and Labuan Bajo, and cheap. It will not create coverage inside the park, where no network reaches, so buy it for the land portion of your trip rather than the sailing.

How can my family reach me in an emergency?

Through our shore team on WhatsApp +62 811 3823 875 or [email protected]. They know the vessel’s programme and can relay urgent messages. Give this contact to your family before you board.

Can I work remotely from the boat?

No. Treat a Komodo liveaboard as offline time. If you have unavoidable commitments, handle them before boarding or after disembarking.
