Phinisi, Speedboat or Day Trip: Three Ways to See Komodo

What are the three formats?

Everyone visiting Komodo picks one of three, and the choice determines the trip far more than which operator you use.

• Day trip. Leave Labuan Bajo in the morning on a shared wooden boat or speedboat, visit two to four stops, return in the evening. Sleep in a hotel in town.
• Speedboat tour. Same commute, faster hull. More stops per day, less time sailing, higher cost, and a punchier ride in swell.
• Phinisi liveaboard. Board once, sleep on the boat inside the park for one to three nights, wake up at the stop.

How do they compare on what matters?

Why does sleeping inside the park change so much?

Because the two best hours in Komodo are the ones before the day fleet arrives and the ones after it leaves. Day boats and speedboats all depart Labuan Bajo within roughly the same window and all arrive at the headline stops within roughly the same window. It is not anyone’s fault; it is the geometry of a single departure port.

A liveaboard sits outside that geometry. Your boat anchored off Padar overnight, so the 04:30 walk up the ridge happens with a handful of people rather than several hundred. The dragon landing happens at first light, when the animals are out warming up. Pink Beach gets visited at the end of the afternoon when the fleet has gone. Is the cost difference as big as it looks?

Less than the headline suggests, once you compare like with like. A liveaboard fare includes your accommodation, all meals, snacks, drinking water, snorkelling equipment and crew for the whole period. A day trip includes the day only — you still pay for a hotel, dinners in town and transfers, and you spend two to three hours a day commuting to and from the park.

Which format suits which traveller?

• One spare day and a tight budget — day trip. See Padar and a dragon, accept the crowds, enjoy it.
• Two days, wanting maximum ground covered — speedboat, if you tolerate a bumpy ride.
• Photography as the point — liveaboard, without hesitation. Both ends of the light are only available to boats that stay.
• Diving — liveaboard. Multiple tanks a day at sites that day boats cannot schedule around.
• Prone to seasickness — liveaboard. A heavy wooden hull at anchor is much steadier than a speedboat at 25 knots; see our seasickness guide.

Is a phinisi actually a comfortable boat?

More than people expect. Yumana is 32 metres by 6 metres across three decks, with eight air-conditioned cabins, indoor lounge and dining room, a sky deck and a main-deck sunbathing area, running twin generators for power and carrying 13,000 litres of fresh water. That is a small hotel that happens to be made of wood and to move.

The wooden hull matters for comfort too: heavy displacement rolls slowly rather than slapping, which is why the format suits people who are nervous about motion. What a phinisi is not is fast — seven to ten knots means crossings take hours, and that is the deliberate trade for everything above. Frequently asked questions

Is a Komodo day trip worth it?

Yes, if a day is what you have. You will see Padar and dragons and get in the water. You will do it alongside the rest of the day fleet, at the busiest hours, with two to three hours of commuting built in.

Is a speedboat better than a phinisi for Komodo?

Faster, not better. A speedboat covers more stops in a day; a phinisi lets you sleep inside the park and reach the early and late windows. In swell, a speedboat is also markedly rougher.

Can you see Padar sunrise on a day trip?

Rarely. Day boats leave Labuan Bajo around dawn and arrive after it. Only boats anchored overnight in the park are reliably on the ridge for sunrise.

Which option is best for avoiding seasickness?

A phinisi liveaboard. The heavy wooden hull moves slowly, crossings are made in daylight and nights are spent at anchor in sheltered water. Speedboats are the hardest ride of the three.

Is a liveaboard much more expensive than a day trip?

Per day, yes; across a trip, less than it appears. The fare includes accommodation, all meals, drinking water, snorkelling equipment and crew, replacing hotel nights, dinners and daily transfers.

Can you do a liveaboard for just one night?

Yes. A 2D1N sailing gives you one night at anchor with a Padar attempt and a dragon landing, and it fits schedules that cannot accommodate more.
